It is an honor and a privilege to be running the 2009 ING New York City Marathon in memory of a selfless hero - SGT James John Regan. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting James, we share a common bond. I served as a Combat Arms Officer and Airborne Ranger in the United States Army for 4 years, directly after graduating from college. My service to our nation was based on a profound "calling" and obligation to honor those who made the supreme sacrifice in order to preserve our way of life. James is the reason I served and I consider him a brother. A portion of the Ranger Creed states "Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one hundred percent and then some." James lived by the Ranger Creed and I am so grateful that he will be by my side on marathon day.

I am also thankful to be sharing in the marathon experience with both my mother, Maureen, and sister, Nancy. We have grown so much closer while focused on a common goal and will ultimately create a precious family memory together.

Around the time that I first decided to run the marathon, I learned that my wife, Eleanor, was pregnant with our first child. Our baby is due in January of 2010. Upon learning this news, I was immediately struck with the realization that this experience will revolve around the celebration of life - the life of James John Regan and the life of my child.
